I was lucky enough to catch a screening of the highly anticipated Under An Arctic Sky by Chris Burkard and Ben Weiland in downtown Los Angeles. My friends and I opted for the 11pm screening thinking there may be a few less people but I highly under estimated Chris’s following. Upon arriving at The Downtown Independent (where the screening was being shown) we were met with a massive line of fans waiting patiently for the doors to open.
We headed into the theatre with the masses and found ourselves some seats right up front. Chris spoke for a quick few minutes introducing himself and his friends who worked on this project with him. After the brief introduction it was the moment we had all been waiting for.
I’m not going to go into detail about this amazing film because I just want you to watch it, but what I will say is it’s a visual masterpiece. From the landscape shots of the huge cliffs bordering the coastline to the amazing drone shots and of cause the waves! From the very beginning I felt like I was apart of the film embarking on this amazing journey into the unknown right next to Chris. This film could have gone several different ways but the way it came off was great. There is only one thing I wanted to see more of which was surfing. The film definitely focuses on the exploration aspect and the journey as a whole but I would have been happy with a few more waves in there.
After the screening Chris and Ben were open to answering questions and they really explained all the parts of the film and what went into it. It was mind blowing to here some of the stories behind certain shots. Nothing came easy for these guys and life in the arctic is not for the faint hearted.
Thankyou Chris and Ben for pushing the limits of surf exploration and sharing this amazing film. I highly recommend seeing this film, you will not be disappointed.
