I was lucky enough to finally make it to the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing 2017 after missing it last year. I headed down for finals weekend and was blown away by the whole event from obviously the surfing but also the skateboarding and the overall vibe of the event.
Arriving on Saturday to thousands of people lining the streets and beach i was a little overwelmed but quicky I was sucked into the vibe of the event. I headed out to the pier to watch some of the Junior Mens heats and soak up some sun. After watching a few heats i decided to head over to the Vans Skatepark series and watch the finals go down. This is where i resided for the rest of the day baking in the stands watching pros like Greyson Fletcher, Tom Schaar and Australian grommet Keegan Palmer go absolutly ham! The skateboarding was beyond amazing and the whole vibe was electric and contageous. The boys put on an amazing show and Tom Schaar managed to take out the contest.
Sunday morning was a little cloudy but it was business as usual for the Mens WQS event. Unfortuatly the waves were not co-operating in the early stages of the morning with Filipe Toledo and Josh Kerr’s heat restarting twice due to either surfer catching a wave in the first 10 minutes of the heat. The boys managed to still punt some massive airs and put a show on for the crowd. Kanoa Igarashi took out the mens event along with Sage Erickson taking out the womens.
The whole event was great to be apart of and the vibes were positive both on land and in the sea. Thanks to Vans for putting on an awesome event and to the Red Bull girls for hooking up the free drinks.
Keep ripping and stay stoked!
